The most common reason why your 2 year old's urine smells so strong is often dehydration.

However other things can also cause a 2 year old's urine to smell so strong which include diet and even certain medical condition including maple syrup urine disease and urinary tract infections.

Maple syrup urine disease is a rare and inherited disorder in which the body cannot properly break down certain amino acids, which cause a sweet and maple syrup like odor in the urine.

Urinary tract infections are also common in young children including 2 year olds and especially in girls although it can also occur in boys as well.

The urinary tract infection can cause strong smelling, cloudy urine or even bloody urine as well as pain or discomfort when urinating.

A urinary tract infection can lead to kidney damage if left untreated so it's important that you take the 2 year old to the doctor to get checked out and have urine tests and blood tests done.

Dehydration can also lead to a 2 year old's urine smelling strong as when a child does not get enough fluids to drink, the child's urine becomes more concentrated and results in a stronger ammonia like smell.

And eating certain foods such as garlic, onions and asparagus can result in a strong odor in the urine.

If the strong urine odor persists or if the 2 year old has pain or blood in their urine when urinating or is passing small amounts of urine you should take the 2 year old to the ER to be safe.
