The brown sequard syndrome symptoms are loss of fine touch and proprioception on the side of injury, weakness or paralysis on the same side as the injury and loss of pain and temperature sensation on the opposite side.

Brown sequard syndrome is also called hemicord syndrome that causes a combination of neurological deficits which result from damage to one side of your spinal cord.

Damage to your corticospinal tract that controls voluntary movement on one side of your spinal cord leads to paralysis or weakness of the limbs on the same side, "hemiparesis or hemiplegia.

The dorsal column which carries information about vibration, touch and proprioception, body position awareness is also affected which leads to a loss of the sensations on the same side of the body as the injury.

And depending on the level of the injury, some reflexes such as the cremasteric or abdominal reflexes can be lost on the affected side.

The loss of pain and temperature sensation can result when the spinothalamic tract, which carries pain and temperature information that crosses over to the opposite side of the spinal cord being damaged can occur in brown sequard syndrome.

Other symptoms of brown sequard syndrome are increased muscle tone and stiffness on the affected side which can occur as a result of damage to your upper motor neurons.

And in some cases, brown sequard syndrome can result in loss of bowel control and bladder control.

And if the injury is high in your cervical spine such as above T1, it can also affect your sympathetic nervous system and result in Horner's syndrome on the same side of the face as the spinal cord injury, that results in drooping eyelids, constricted pupils, and a decrease in sweating on that side.
