The reason why we no longer celebrate Columbus Day is so that we can avoid celebrating Columbus and the European colonization or even due to raised controversy over the legacy of Christopher Columbus.

In the years that followed Berkeley's action, other local governments and institutions either renamed Columbus Day or have canceled Columbus Day, which is also to celebrate Native American History Month.

Columbus Day is still a federal holiday and is observed but it's not really celebrated.

The true meaning of Columbus Day is to celebrate October 12th, 1492, the day and year when the explorer Christopher Columbus had completed his journey across the Atlantic Ocean and landed in the "New World."

And what Christopher Columbus actually reached on October 12th 1492 was an island that he had named San Salvador, which is now part of the Bahamas.

The three reasons for Columbus day is to commemorate Christopher Columbus's voyage across the Atlantic in 1492, and for celebrating the Italian American heritage contributions and also for recognizing the historical significance of the encounter that occurred between Indigenous peoples and European peoples.

Indigenous People's day is observed on the same day as Columbus Day, which is the second Monday in October.

However Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples day are distinct holidays that have different meanings.

Indigenous People's Day celebrates the history as well as culture, and the ongoing resilience of Native Americans and other Indigenous peoples.

And Columbus Day commemorates Christopher Columbus's arrival in the Americas.

Indigenous people actually discovered America and not Christopher Columbus.

Indigenous people are the original inhabitants of a region that have historical continuity with pre-colonial societies as well as a strong connection to their ancestral lands as well as natural resources.

Indigenous people maintain distinct languages, social systems and cultures that also predate and differ from the dominant societies around them.

Examples are the First Nations in Canada, Maya in Mexico, Sami in Sweden, the Ainu in Japan and Guatemala.

Indigenous people have a historical connection to a territory prior to the colonization or the establishment of current state boundaries.

The indigenous people also have a strong link to their traditional territories, which is also fundamental to the indigenous peoples collective physical and culture survival.

Indigenous people also self identify as distinct from other sectors of society and are resolved to preserve their identity and they also maintain at least in part, their own economic, social and political institutions.

And indigenous people also have unique languages, cultures, knowledge systems and beliefs.

Examples of indigenous people are Americas like Native Americans, American Indians, and Alaska Natives in the United States, First Nations, Metis in Canada and Inuit.

Europe such as the Sami in Sweden, Norway and Finland.

Asia, the Ainu in Japan.

Africa, the Berbers and the San people.

And Oceania or the The Maori in New Zealand and Aboriginal Australians.
