Can antivirus slow down computer?

I installed antivirus on my computer a few days ago and now my computer has seemed to slow down a lot. 

Can having antivirus software installed on a computer cause a computer to slowdown?

Yes it can. I removed my antivirus software from my computer a few years ago because it was causing it to slow down.

I don't really need it either. I just watch what websites I browse and if a link looks suspicious then I don't click on it.

If you're careful on what sites you visit or what things you download then you really don't need antivirus software at all.
