The fear of snakes is called ophidiophobia which is a kind of phobia where you have an extreme fear of snakes.

It is perfectly normal for adults and children to have fears, but having a simple fear of snakes is different from having a phobia. ‌

Fear of snakes is very common. Half the people in the world feel anxious about snakes.

Snakes can make good pets as long as the venomous part has been removed from the snake.

Snakes can be good around children but it's not recommended to have snakes around babies and children as they could bite the child if they try to play with it.

Although snakes are often misunderstood and sometimes gain negative attention, they can make great companion animals and require minimal care.

If you are interested in owning a snake, remember to research and consult a veterinarian that is familiar with the health requirements of snakes.

On average a snake lives up to 9 years.

However some snakes live from 5 years to as long as 30 years depending on the snake.

Some snakes get killed in the wild or by homeowners and live a shorter life while some snakes as pets live up to 9 to 15 years.

A friend of mine had a snake as a pet that lived 15 years before it died of natural causes but I've known other snakes as pets die at 8 to 9 years old.

Snakes are really scared of humans.

Although a snake can and will snap at you and bite you if they need too the snake actually prefers to get away from you instead.

If you see a snake and are coming towards it the snake will most often try to take off and slither away from you first before they try to bite you.

Most snake bites occur when you actually get near or really close to the snake.

If the snake is cornered by a human or you're within a few feet of the snake then the snake may then decide to bite you.

But for the majority of snakes they would rather get away from a human than try to bite them.

Biting a human or dog, cat etc is the last resort and defense for the snake.

If you do get bitten by a snake you should seek medical treatment as soon as possible especially if you don't know whether the snake is venomous or not.

Some snakes such as the Gardener Snake are not venomous while other snakes such as the Rattle Snake are.

The best thing to do to avoid snake bites is to avoid snakes and stay away from the snakes if and when possible.
